Operation Deconstruction: Research on Accessibility and Usability

Roanoke County Public Schools

Web Standards

While a style definition is used to hide the underline of links, FONT tags are used elsewhere to define page appearance.

Usability Concerns

The layout of the page is straightforward and fits within one screen without the need to scroll. The use of the graphic for text on top is not necessary, but works. Having links open in new windows is discouraged while one remains at the same site (link to e-mail addresses).

The jumpy links (as the one is over the superintendent's name that resizes text on rollover) makes mouse focus difficult, and may jar certain users. A link to the superintendent ought to go to her page; instead it is an e-mail link. E-mail links should be so-identified.

The central (white) area of the page might be better utilized for content.

Accessibility Concerns

While much of the page uses text, it would benefit more from the use of structural HTML. ALT tags should be used for all graphics.
