Professional Wins
Gains through Marketing and Branding
At PDK International/Educators Rising, I led as a director through a change in chief executive changeover and through marketing efforts and collaboration with our sales team, helped achieve the nonprofit’s highest sustained financial growth over a year and a half, helping to put $2M into reserves for the first time in the organization’s 120-year history. At PDK, I’ve championed the ethical use of AI and grew the organization’s social profile and launched the organization’s first podcast.
I later worked with a consultancy to launch the organization’s rebranding as Educators Rising.
Research
As a researcher, I have evaluated educational programs and have led an action research project focused on looking at the relationship between a technology coach and the teacher toward co-designing deeper learning experiences for students. My research during my doctoral journey involved over 40-interviews as part of a four-person research team examining best practices with 1:1 computing programs in schools.
As part of my doctoral program I gained experience in program evaluation by looking at the success and evolution of Goochland County High School’s Senior Project. I then later completed a year-long dissertation-in-practice capstone project examining best practices with one-to-one computing programs, which was awarded the CPED Dissertation-in-Practice (DiP) Award in 2014. As part of that project, we conducted over 40 hours of interviews with technology and school leaders across 5 different districts to understand best practices with a technology roll-out with 1:1 devices.
Deeper Learning & Instructional Innovation
A lot of my day-to-day work as a leader and instructional technologist is captured in a number of Apple Books showcasing our schools’ 1:1 program. These include Deeper Learning by Design as author and designer, and Goochland Elementary, Goochland Middle, and Goochland High as editor and consulting writer.
Also while in Goochland I developed the G21 instructional framework which I oversaw for a decade. This was an effort to bring project-based learning to every classroom. This dovetailed nicely when we began our 1:1 initiative, focused on deeper learning.
While in Goochland I also started our blogging initiative which before the advent of LMS systems in K-12, allowed our teachers to provide weekly updates to parents on classroom activities and themes, creating a strong conduit of teacher-to-parent communication.
While in Goochland, I became an Apple Distinguished Educator and led the charge to have our entire district recognized as an Apple Distinguished Program. When Apple changed the format, we once again had all five schools named as Apple Distinguished Schools.
Strategic Planning
At the Virginia Department of Education, I have worked in the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to support the office in addition to managing the agency’s strategic plan. In this role I served on the agency’s Cabinet, Executive Cabinet, and Leadership Teams.
While in Goochland County, I was responsible for the development of two different 6-year plans, pulling together student, parent, and staff stakeholder groups along with our school board.
At PDK International, I served on the strategic planning committee under CEO James Lane.
Professional Learning
In the fall of 2001, I transitioned into a new role in Goochland to formally lead professional learning for all teachers focused on instructional technology. As Director of Innovation & Strategy, I supervised our instructional technology coaches and school librarians. Together we provided hundreds of hours of training to teachers in both technology and instructional innovation.
At the Virginia Department of Education, under the Department of Learning and Innovation, Office of Humanities to lead the agency’s efforts with professional learning for constituents in the field, including Virginia’s 100K+ preK-12 teachers. This work involves transitioning all professional learning with the state’s learning management system, Canvas.

Writing and Communications
In high school I taught myself some of the earliest versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PageMaker. Those skills later led to my teaching of graphics communications at Goochland High School. My writing section covers a number of published articles.
As a developer of training and online training, I’ve developed a strong skill to make complex systems more accessible for both student and adult learners.
