In 2025 our organization downsized and with a new editor-in-chief, I was on hand to provide graphics support for our organization’s magazine, Kappan. We outsourced the design of the magazine to match our former in-house style, but I was needed to produce our house ads and the covers.
The opportunity to work on the cover was a job I took with great respect, especially given the longevity and reputation of our journal.

For the Summer ’26 issue I’d created a cover similar to this with a Getty image in the background and two different models as the stand-in teachers for our “Teachers as Leaders” theme. However, at the last minute, we made an editorial decision to feature the two keynote speakers at the Educators Rising National Conference on the cover. Not my photography, but Ashlie Crosson and Bryan Butcher, Jr. appear with a similar stylized duotone look I’d applied in Photoshop.

The Fall 2025 issue features a photograph of our state officers assembled at our summer national conference in Orlando. The photo was taken with my iPhone and the edits with the masthead text was done in Photoshop. The final cover was composed in InDesign.
This last cover that I’m sharing was a riff off of a subway map.

I created this in Illustrator. The pun of course is on the concept of a “curriculum map.” The stops, of course, consist of various education jargon. The names of the “lines” became the section headers in this issue.
