In 2013, we started our school division’s one-to-one program with iPads. It was a soft launch with three grade levels. And we were using Apple iPads which required the use of Apple IDs.
At the time, the way to deploy these devices involved parents creating their student Apple IDs with the help of staff. It required a lot of extra planning. Apple sent engineers to assist. And after a year of the frustration (including the Apple servers shutting us down because of a suspected cyber attack), I penned a note to Tim Cook along with this diagram. I told them we needed help at making the process easier, without direct parental involvement.
Apple met with us and said internally they’d set about to refine the process, calling the project “Project Goochland.” We were impressed with the name.
And here’s the document that illuminated the process I’d devised for our parent deployment nights.
For those curious, it was designed in Omni Graffle Pro using a functional flow template that I’d previously used for instructional design mapping.
